You’ve learned a little about Weigh Down, and now you’d like a little preview! Well, here are just some examples of the great tips, instruction, and encouragement waiting for you in your Weigh Down class!
It is always fun to get an invitation from friends to join them for a weekend brunch or special occasion. First and foremost, I invite God into every meal because I love Him and I am thankful for His enjoyable food.
After inviting God into this wonderful eating occasion, I survey
all the food choices available at the buffet. I carefully make my
selections based on what flavors and foods I am craving at the time. I
take very small amounts of the items I most want to try, and once I
sit down, I begin to rate the items. That means that I taste a tiny
bit of each item and decide which are my favorites. Then I take only
the best, most sumptuous bites of each item, making sure I am filling
up with only the tastiest parts, since I already know it won’t take
much to fill me up! (No more saving the best for last - you know you
will fill up soon, and it is much easier to leave the drier, less
attractive bites on the plate!)
I always sip a beverage after each bite or two, and I make sure to put my fork down and enjoy the conversation after every bite or two, as well. This slows down my eating and helps me to enjoy the people I am with instead of focusing so much on the food!
In my past, I have been known to eat a king-size candy bar in three
bites without ever truly tasting it! Now, I choose to eat the small,
bite-size candy bars, and it still takes me three or four bites!
Taking small or even tiny bites helps you savor the flavor and enjoy
each morsel of the chocolate.
Sometimes it is easier to choose naturally small units of chocolate, like M&Ms, Hershey Kisses, or bite-size candy bars. But remember - just because it is small, that doesn’t mean you can pop the whole thing in your mouth! Take bites of it, nibbles that let you truly enjoy the taste. Let each bite melt in your mouth and savor the gift of chocolate that God gives us! What used to take me only a second or two to put into my stomach can now take me almost 20 minutes - sometimes more - and the nice thing is that I usually have plenty of candy left over after I am satisfied.
When you enjoy a night on the town with your spouse or friends, remember to thank God and invite Him to this special occasion! Plan your eating that day knowing that you will be going out that night-for instance, you might want to eat a tiny lunch or even skip it so that you will be sure to have true hunger when you arrive at the restaurant.
When you arrive, instead of just focusing on the food, take time to
enjoy the atmosphere, the candlelight, the soft music, the
surroundings, and especially the company you are with. As you begin
the meal, remember that your hunger will be satisfied with a small
amount, so think about what you really want to eat. I myself rarely
start with an appetizer, because it is often so filling that I am full
before my dinner even arrives! Instead, I might enjoy a few spoonfuls
of soup, a bite or two of bread, and a few bites of salad.
Then, when my entrée arrives, I rate the items on my plate and choose only the very best looking bites! When I feel myself getting just the slightest bit satisfied, I stop eating and push my plate slightly to the side or place my napkin on it. I want to be sure and save room for a bite or two of dessert! When the server comes, I ask for a carryout box and take the rest of my meal home to enjoy again the next day!
Sometimes I like to enjoy a good old-fashioned cheeseburger, French
fries, and a milk shake from the local fast food restaurant. I make
sure the burger is fixed just the way I like it, and then before I
begin, I cut it in half, or even fourths. This way, I can get to the
best, juiciest bites. I add the perfect amount of salt to my fries,
and I pick through them to find the ones that look best. I choose a
fry, dip it into my ketchup, and take a bite. I savor it, and dip the
rest of the fry in the ketchup, and take another bite. Sometimes it
takes me two or three bites just to finish one French fry! After every
bite or two, I enjoy a sip from my milk shake.
I also enjoy fast-food
pizza! Here is a great tip when you eat pizza: use a knife and fork!
We are too accustomed to just picking up the whole piece and taking a
big bite. Cut your pizza into small pieces and eat them one at a time
with a fork. It is much neater and it will take you much longer to
finish just one small piece of pizza! God wants us to enjoy everything
in moderation, and you will be amazed at all the wonderful flavors He
has created for us to enjoy without guilt.
